| | In 2002, I wandered from Rio de Janeiro to Salvador de Bahia and back to the southern end of Brazil - beach-bumming at Ilha do Mel, hiking at Parque Nacional de Diamantina near Lencois, whale-watching near Caravelas, piranha-fishing and animal-observing at the Pantanal, abseiling and river-snorkelling at Bonito, waterfall-gazing at Iguacu Falls... Brazil, with its incredible beaches, spectacular nature, diverse wildlife and funky cool culture, has to be indulged thoroughly with all five... no... SIX senses.
During my return to South America in 2005, I spent 2 months traversing up the length of the Brazilian coastline, from Porto Alegre back to familiar Rio de Janeiro, to the quaint town of Paraty, and to my beloved Salvador, to Olinda and Recife, to Fortaleza and great beaches nearby and to the not-so-nice town of Belen to take the Amazon riverboat down into Manuas. Along the way, drunk on fruit juices, I stayed with many hosts and made wonderful friends. I experienced music from bossa nova to Olodom to Candomble to organ music at the cathedral to violin serenades in the streets to boleros and forros in a dancing hall to samba in a club. Wow, truly wow.
After lying on numerous gorgeous beaches, I spent 5 nights lying in a hammock with more than 200 'boatmates' as I journeyed down the Amazon River on a riverboat. Hail to the spirit of Maqroll!!
